Friends jumping to the sea

Location apps are the hottest hot! Be an early bird ;)

Do you have a gadget to find where your car is? Or a tool to find your friends when you are lost in the streets? What today seems easy, was just a dream a few years ago. We don´t even realise how location apps have changed our lives. Finding cars, finding friends, arriving on time, checking out the news, the weather, the new restaurants… Look at your installed apps: Wave Application, Park My Car, Cabify or Google Maps. We have shortlisted the most common situations in which you use location to make your life easier:

Find your friends – no more “where are you’s”

Wave Application Let's Meet app loc

When you arrive late (we all do, sometimes 😉 ) and your friends are already gone it is difficult to meet them if they are heading somewhere and all you’ve got is a bunch of missed calls and unanswered messages. Here at Wave we found out the solution. Open a group on Wave Let’s Meet app with your friends and see where they are going or set a meeting point. Wave is 100% private so you all need to accept before you can start see each other on a live map. What’s new in the 3.0 is the Temporary Sharing – feature: now you can wave with the non-Wavers! Send your live location during 15 min to any of your contacts who don’t have Wave installed.

Find the car

Looking for your car trying to look like you’re just walking around? Right, this happened to most of us. The app that we liked most to solve this problem is My Car Locator, since it allows you to register accurately using the location your car and you can consult it whenever needed, as well as get directions to get to the car.

Park the car

w

Not only where you parked but where to park? The odyssey of everyone living in a big city. If it takes you 20 minutes to get to a place, you know you will at least have to add 10 more to find a parking spot. And that being lucky, right? Applications like Wazypark identify public garages in cities, airports or stadiums where you can see if there are places available and reserve them in advance. To park in the street, it allows you to see where there are spots left, thanks to comments from users who leave their place free at any given time.

Find your favorite restaurant or bar

Whether you need a vegan restaurant, a deluxe experience or just standard food, you only have to go to one of the world’s largest restaurant portals, Yelp, where you can find, thanks to your location, the most suitable one to your preferences. We love the amount of filters you have to sort out for prices, type of food, location and user ratings.

Find your date

We become more practical every day, and to find new friends in a city or to have an appointment we do not want to have to travel very far. Applications such as Tinder, Happn for dating and finding a romance are ideal tools that use our phone location as the first filter when it comes to finding our ideal partner for weekends or romantic dates.

What star do you have in front of you?

Astronomers or the more romantic ones also have a perfect application that identifies their location. Sky Map, from Google, allows you to observe the sky through the camera of your mobile device to know with which constellation you are facing. The compass and gps are the essential tools for this application.

GPS

There are so many and they are so good that we have tried a few, from classic Google Maps to some paid as Navigon. We like all of them, although we have fell in love with Here, a young promise that has delighted us with the indications of the type “follow the natural route of the road” that we believe are very intuitive and differ from the usual robotic language of all GPS we have.

SXSW 2017: Location is the new tech trend

The annual conference that brings together startups and consumers in Austin, Texas until the 19th of March has introduced us new businesses that could rocket to the moon soon. Among the stars of this edition of SXSW 2017, we could highlight Seek and Zippyspot.

Seek has a geolocation system combined with augmented reality, in a similar way to Pokemon Go, to approach the brands that want to interact with their users when they are in a certain location. This means that stores can place an icon or an animation on a determined street to provide interaction between brands and their users. On the other hand, Zippyspot, is a location app that connects restaurants, bars and stores with customers nearby to attract them with coupons and discounts. In other words smartphone replaces the PR person handing over the flyers.

More companies are using location services to offer added value to their customers, for instance Here is another startup spotted at SXSW 2017, that uses a bunch of traffic data to predict the best routes for transport companies, such as taxis, cars or trucks, or even to find probable parking spots free at certains times in various streets.

In Europe we can see a few successful startups that are nailing it right now: Witrac uses its technology to track specific vehicles in the Ford Almussafes car park. Finding an automobile in record time seems simple in a car park, but given that they have parked thousands of cars in the same area, it is very difficult to find an specific one. For instance, Fiat announced a few years ago that they use drones with camera to fly over the cars parked and search for specific ones in their fabric in Turin. However, Ford posed new problems as it is a closed space.

The Witrac founders Pons and Ferrer, devised a set of sensors and connected them to a mobile geolocation system. Without cables it is fast and effective. Their business is basically industrial connectivity that can be transferred to other fields in which they are working, such as, finding defibrillators in a hospital. Witrac has only 8 employees and are developing a real time system that is solving the problems of big players.

Where to place your new business or to buy a real state is another successful pattern we are seeing recently in startup fields like Measurence, a company that analyses data from different location systems to draw a landscape of movement in a city and know exactly how many people walk daily in an specific area. Their founders wanted to use technology to analyze urban traffic and sell the data to companies that are going to place a new sucursal or office in a new city. Specifically analytics in – store to track the behaviour of consumers is the business of the successful startup Proximus.

Location for people

We can disguise many different uses of location systems, whether they are business driven or connect directly with the consumer. We believe that nobody wants to be located at all times, or by everybody.

This is why we came up with Wave Application. Today, with 8 million downloads, it keeps on making it easy and fun to find your friends by sharing your live location on a map only with the people you choose. We have already facilitated 60 millions of meetings and there have been more than 260 millions of Wave sessions around the world. It’s 2017. If we are constantly moving, why should meeting up be so complicated?

Video 4K, long battery life (finally) and the comeback of the legendary Nokia 3310: the best picks right from the MWC17

Mobile World Congress has started in Barcelona stronger than ever, with more than 2000 exhibitors and 100.000 expected attendees. The light presentation of Samsung, that has introduced only two new tablets and a new version of Oculus glasses, makes it easy for the rest ;).

There are, for example, Sony Xperia Touch, a projector that allows any surface to be converted into a touchpad, unbreakable phones and the Nestle coffee maker connected to the Internet, to explore. With so many surprises around us, the World Mobile Congress has re-established itself as the most important event in the world of mobile technology, so without further delay, let’s go to the most important: which mobile phones you will carry this year in your pocket.

The beast: Sony XZ Premium

The manufacturer of sensors and lenses Sony introduced the smartphone with the highest resolution in the world: its Sony Xperia XZ Premium records video on 4K with his 19 MP camera and has a full color screen HDR 4K that will turn any of your videos into an authentic piece of art. The camera has a predictive option to take pictures automatically when it detects movement around. To process quickly such quality, it carries the most powerful processor of the moment, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835, with 4GB of RAM.

The smartphone comes in black and has 5.5, inches screen, a powerful battery life and has the fastest connection to Internet in the market.

Middle class smartphones

Lenovo is attracting a big part of the cake with two new smartphones Moto G5 Plus and Moto G5, a 5.2 and a 5 inches smartphones that come with 13MP camera, high processor and a great battery life that allows you to have a 6 hours working phone after just 15 minutes of charging.

Nokia is back! The Finnish manufacturer wants to conquer us again after the famous fiasco we all know a little too well. The three new smartphones are built by its subsidiary HMD, also Finnish, and carry the latest version of Android, displayed natively on the phones, something that shows that both companies are working side by side.

Nokia 6 is a 5.5. inches smartphone with 18MP camera and a strong processor Qualcomm Snapdragon 430. On the other hand, Nokia 5 and Nokia 4 come in a 5 inches shape with 8 MP camera and a lighter processor.

The legendary Nokia 3310 is back

Nokia brings as a gift for fans the return of the mythical 3310, the best-selling phone in history with 120 millions of terminals worldwide. The new version comes with colourful tactile screen, a simple menu to call and receive calls and of course: the snake game. Sadly, it only works with 2G frequency, specifically uses 900 MHz and 1800 MHz frequency, an old network that is still prevalent in most of Europe and Asia but does not work in the US, Canada, South America and Central America.

Kuri robot

What digital trends to look out for in 2017? Artificial Intelligence might be part of your life by the end of the year ;)

What if you were suddenly told you have been doing it all wrong? What if you were told you don’t actually know how to brush your own teeth? Or do your own grocery shopping?

AI is no longer a word coming from a Sci-Fi film, it is going to be part of your daily life, an inseparable friend that will help you achieve the simplest of the tasks and a help that will change the way you interact with search engines. Here is why AI is going to be a part of your life in 2017:

Echo Dot with Alexa

Alexa is the new voice-recognition assistant developed by Amazon, but instead of being placed on your mobile device, like Siri or Google Now, Alexa lives in Echo, a small device that is plugged at home and stays there permanently to listen to all of your requests. Ask it, for example, to order the grocery only by saying it in your living room, and Alexa will connect directly to your Amazon Prime account and make the order effective.

However, this is only the beginning, as Amazon introduced the second version of Echo and the new apps two weeks ago at CES. Its operative system Alexa has already partnered with more than 300 apps such as games or lightning controlling, allowing you to control even more things at home.

Ara toothbrush

This smart device that you use at least twice a day will provide you with daily or weekly reports based on your habits to help you improve your technique. “Raw data from the sensors runs through the processor, enabling the system to learn your habits and refine accuracy the more it’s used”, according to its CEO Serval, as BusinessWire has noted. The toothbush, created by Kolebree is connected to a mobile app through bluetooth and it was one of the most original devices displayed at CES.

Sleep Number 360

Do you ever think that you spend around 30% of your life sleeping? Then considering a smart bed might be better choice than the new iPad. As recent studies reveal more about the processes we go through while we sleep, the new technologies are using this knowledge to improve your sleep, such as raising or decreasing the temperature of the mattress or inflate or deflate some parts of it to adjust your position.  What is really new about Smart Number 360 is that the bed learns your habits and adapts its structure to your needs without even having to use the app. One example shown at CES 2017 is that the bed knows when you snore and raises a bit your head by inflating the mattress, however if you keep on snoring, the smart bed will find other ways to make it lower day by day by inflating or deflating the bed.

Kuri

It is not only the cutest robot we have seen at CES, but Kuri has also stolen the show by showing us all the features displayed on Echo or Google Home inside a mobile robot. Kuri’s wheels will follow your wherever you go, take your selfies for you, record the videos when you ask for it, and commit some simple tasks such as turning on the lights, playing that playlist you really want to listen to and reply to your daily questions about the weather or  traffic.

While more and more companies are using AI and voice- recognition to build up new assistants, the need for being different is bringing us the chance to choose among a cute robot, an app on a mobile phone, a personalized device or a smart appliance to help us deal with our busy lives. Which one would would you choose? Or is the world going too fast in your opinion?

Drop us a line, we are always happy to hear from you!
