Camino de Santiago route

How to prepare your route to Camino de Santiago

Famous throughout the world, these routes that run in the north of Spain and south of France to Santiago de Compostela, have turned a medieval tradition into a spiritual, religious and sportive experience enjoyed by more than 200.000 people every year.

The Camino de Santiago is, in fact, a Catholic pilgrimage from the thirteenth century to the city of Santiago de Compostela, in Spain, where it is believed that the remains of the apostle Santiago El Mayor are found in the cathedral. Walkers from all over the world reunite to go on foot, by horse or by bike into an experience that mix medieval history, ancient religious devotion, personal growth, meditation and adventure with stunning landscapes.

There are several routes from all over Europe that are valid, however the most famous one is Roncesvalles, that departs from this small city in the south of France and is about 760 km in total. Any walker can jump into the route at any moment and it is only needed to walk 100km to get the certification of the route.

Getting up before the sun rises and walking the whole day across natural landscapes could be hard though, but if it is just what you were looking for, read our guide and find out how to prepare your route, and get some tips from previous travelers and the official organization:

Get ready months before the route

Train yourself several months earlier. You will have many kilometers to do every day, and although it is recommended that you adapt your route to your speed and fatigue, it is normal to travel between 10 and 30 kilometers a day. So start a few months before walkingslowly to avoid damaging your feet and ligaments during El Camino. Good footwear, a very, very light backpack, many pairs of socks and continuous massages will help you overcome the physical part of the route.

Choose the landscape you like best

The options are very varied, you can make a way through stone walls and small towns for which it seems that the centuries have not passed. You could also get into the forest, cross bridges over rivers and climb mountains. It is an adventure and nature trip, and you have many options to choose from. On the official website you can find pictures and tips to help you decide.

Use apps for your security

Wave Application

Depending of the season, making the Camino de Santiago can be a solitary experience and personal knowledge. Even though there are thousands of people with whom you will have dinner, most of the day you will be on your own. As in any activity, several things might happen, such as losing yourself, injuring your ankle along the way, running out of water and not knowing where to get another or needing to rest without knowing where is the nearer hostel. You can always be connected to others with your smartphone and acquire some apps that will make the way easier.

In order to not to get lost and to let other walkers or your family know where you are, share your live location with them temporally on Wave application, a private app where you can create a group with other walkers and share for some hours a day your location, spot each other on the map and gather together in the best place. Wave is a free location app that has already millions of users in 150 countries and is compatible with Android and iOS.

Another interesting app is Emergency + in case you are in trouble, you just need to push a button and it will automatically call the nearest emergency services that will come to your position.

Get to the hostel soon

All those who make the road can sleep for free along the way in the thousands of hostels that are ready for it, but in the most crowded areas those are filled quickly, so it is best to use the app Buen Camino de Santiago Pro to see all accommodation options available. Another interesting app is Camino, a social network where you can connect with other walkers, meet them or just read their reviews of routes, restaurants and accommodation.

Feedback from a user: How using a real time location sharing can be helpful when things don’t go as planned?

Going out with a bike on a summer afternoon is one of the greatest pleasures. On holidays it becomes an essential activity for sport lovers, like Julio, one of our beloved users. Julio knows that the physical activity of biking couples well with the chance to discover some places that otherwise would remain hidden, such as mountain tops, getting through the fog in the forests or surrounding a lake. Riding a bike means speed, freedom, beautiful landscapes and of course, getting fit.

“My son usually goes cycling before going to work, even if we do not go together we like to be connected so I can see his whereabouts, how far he has traveled and feel calm while he goes out to the nature with the bike. Parents love to share experiences with their children even through an app”, says Julio.

Not only is it nice to share same interest, but it can also result very helpful. Julio recently explained us how using Wave helped him to overcome a bike accident:

“I opened a wave one day that my son was going out with the bike and I saw that he stopped at one point for a long time and then went to a gas station. There he texted me on the Wave chat to inform me that he had to fix the wheel of the bike, however it did not go well. After a while he stopped again and texted me he needed me to get and pick him because the wheel was broken again and he did not have time enough to fix it before returning home”, says Julio.

“Therefore, I opened the map on Wave and I saw exactly where he was, I got the directions to get to him and picked him up with my 4×4. It was super easy to arrive there. Without Wave, I would have been more complicated for me to know where he was and understand his explanations”, reports Julio.

In the nature there are no clear signs to indicate how to get to a place or how long it takes to reach one place. It is also not easy to arrange a meeting point as you could do in a city, so with Wave you can locate all those who go by bike in real time, see where they are and how to reach them.

Wave is an app to share your location temporarily and privately with whoever you want. This way you can open a map to follow your friends footsteps and feel connected and safe as at any moment they can identify where you are. On the map the participants can spot each other, get directions, set a meeting point and chat.

“When he goes out we open a Wave and we both share the location in real time so he knows where I am and I can see that he is fine, where he is going to and if he takes too long to return home. Wave is the best application I have found to be connected with my son without picking up the phone and calling him, as it does not disturb us when it comes to going with the bike and it allows me to help him whenever I can”, says Julio.

User stories make us very happy because we see how useful Wave is for helping people to be connected and feel safe anywhere in the world practising their favourite activity. Here you have some other stories to get you ready for the next adventure!

How to plan an affordable getaway – 6 brilliant tips

An expert traveler knows how to prepare a getaway in the best possible way. There are several options and with the following tips you will see that planning your trip can be easier and cheaper than you may think, without having to give up going on vacation. However, it requires something from you. Look at the list that we have prepared and enjoy!

Take the most of the stopovers

Madrid sunset
Ángela Ojeda Heyper – Flickr

Cheaper international flights usually do not arrive directly to your destination, especially if you are more than 4 hours away from your starting point. The stopovers can be an opportunity to extend your getaway to two or more cities, without needing to sleep in them. If you are traveling around Europe, many of your intercontinental flights will probably connect in cities such as Frankfurt, Milan or Madrid. In the case of traveling from South America to the United States, it is probably that you stop in Atlanta or New York;  if you travel from Europe to Asia, visit Istanbul or Doha, while from Australia to the northern hemisphere you’ll probably stop somewhere in Singapore, Shanghai or Seoul.

Take the time you have and take a trip around a city you did not expect, while saving money avoiding a direct flight. Try the local food at street markets or buy sandwiches and go for a walk. The trip has just begun!

There are several good flights and hotel search engines such as Kayak, Trivago or some a bit less known such as Hoteloogle.

Choose wisely where to sleep

If your trip includes more than one city or town, try to narrow down the cities in which you are going to sleep and establish a base point from which to travel around the region or the country. This will save you a lot of money, since local buses are very cheap and traveling constantly from one part of the country to another incurs in more expenses, less rest and much time wasted looking for a new place to check in.

In addition, some web pages renting cheap homes like Airbnb, Homestay, Spotahome charge you a fee for each booking, so do some hostels, so the less places you choose to sleep, the more money you’ll save.

In terms of accommodation, you probably already know the different options for renting apartments, hostels, couch surfing or hotels, depends on the quality of the site where you want to spend the night. However, first investigate the areas you are going to visit, for example in all big cities the business areas have a large variety of hotels that are empty during the summer, in the absence of business meetings. Therefore they offer great discounts and are always well connected by public transport with the city.

No more calling, no more ‘Where are you’s?’

Overseas calls to your friends, your family or the host cost a lot of money and can give you an unpleasant surprise when you get home and see the bill. However, when you travel in group it is easy to get lost, as people usually split for a while to visit different spots in the city, or some of you need a rest while others are more willing to continue sightseeing. In those situations, connecting to others is needed and the best way to do so is using Internet and taking the most of the best apps to travel in the market.

If you are traveling in Europe, you are lucky because they have recently eliminated roaming, the fee charged for using a foreign operator, and you can use the Internet to the fullest without paying more than at home. In other places you normally have better fares to use Internet rather than calling.

Your best option is to download for free Wave Application, an app available for both Android and iOS, that allows you share your location privately with your contacts in a real time map. Forget about learning how to pronounce the street of the hostel, just check the map and see where your friends are in the city and set a meeting point to gather in the centre.

Wave is the best application to share your location privately with any of your contacts, when you need it most.

Set alerts for your favourite destination

An inveterate traveler will tell you that the destination is the least important part of the trip so if you think of going to Paris you will probably spend twice as much as you would spend in Toulouse, also in France. However, if you really want to visit a certain city, set alerts on the phone through different flight comparators and just wait to receive the best offer.

Prices of the flights change constantly up and down and if you already know in which range they move, you will be able to take an offer without wasting your time comparing prices on the Internet.

Share everything you can

Sharing is living, it is the motto in many countries and it is also an excellent way to save. The options are unlimited, you can go from one city to another using carpooling services such as Blablacar, or staying with people who live there with Couchsurfing or HomeStay. However, there is more you can do: search for travel buddies on Meetup to get discounts on group tickets for museums, touristic tours or even make a group to rent a boat, it is always cheaper to rent it in group.

Eat at home at least once a day

Plan one or two meals at your rented home, let’s say breakfast and lunch. Eating out is always more expensive than preparing a meal at home, especially if you cook pasta, salad or sandwiches. In addition, if you travel in group sharing the expenses of the grocery will make you find ridiculously cheap to eat well at home. If you are sleeping in a hotel, cool food such as sandwiches are a good choice to prepare in your room.

You may think that street food is cheap, however it is usually not enough to save money more than eating at home. Other advantage of this routine is helping your stomach to the new food, if you are in a country with a very different cuisine, you can rest one day from the spice or the new flavours, cooking something similar to what you usually eat.

Now you are all set! Try these tips and enjoy your getaway!

Just for adventurers, Superbank Beach is famous all over the world for its vast wild waves and solid walls where surfers crowd to prove their bravery. This beach is located on the Golden Coast, a spectacularly good area for surfers by waves and swell and for the length of its beaches.

UNITES STATES

Pipeline famous surf wave

Hawaii is THE destination for the US surfers, because it offers good conditions and beautiful scenarios. The mother of all waves is in Pipeline and you can find a strong west swell following a strong north swell. Three large reefs crown this beach and cause waves of up to 6 meters. In addition, the tubes that are formed are fun and a challenge reserved only for the best.

EUROPE

To start off with your footing in the surf world, San Sebastian in the Bay of Biscay, can be the best combination of gastronomic holidays with soft beaches and a vibrant Spanish atmosphere. Many surf schools are grouped along the coastline that offers consistent waves but also has very nice protected caves. It is quite windy though.

Intermediate swells with strong wind are the characteristics that make Gwithian Beach in Cornwall, the suitable destination for those intermediate surfers who want a bit of challenge without risking their board.

The Atlantic is not an easy battlefield, and in northern Europe it can be extremely cold. If this does not discourage you, try to go to the beautiful emerald island, Ireland. You have probably heard about Bali with fear and admiration, but among its many beaches it does have spots for beginners with surf schools around. The best known is Kuta beach, a long sandy beach that sends gentle waves with a slight swell. Fun and very cool to practice balance.

For experts on riding waves, it’s recommended to go near Sumatra, to the islands Mentawai. The advantage of this place is that you can go with few friends to surf without waiting queues, as there are so many islands and beaches with good conditions that the surfers are very spread out. It has strong winds and swell, not recommended for beginners.

AFRICA

South Africa is home to the best surf spots in the continent, as hosts many schools for beginners. One of the most beautiful beaches and with a consistent but gentle wave is Unzumbe.

Also in this country, there is one of the most recognized destinations in the world: J Bay or Jeffrey’s bay. Nowhere have we seen the precise water formations, such as supertubes, vertical walls or albatrosses. It has a very definite and constant swell and the waves can reach several meters height. The dominant winds are then offshore from the west to the southwest. If you feel like going to visit another country, Senegal offers wild conditions and a stunning landscape, especially in Les Almadies, that has reef breaks and consistent swell.
